PTI, Ahmedabad: A sessions court here has ordered social activist Tista Setalvad and former Director General of Police R. B. Sreekumar’s bail application was rejected on Saturday. The two have been arrested on charges of allegedly fabricating evidence to implicate innocent persons in the 2002 Gujarat riots.
Additional Chief Justice D. D. Denying bail to the accused, Thakkar said that the aim of the accused is to destabilize the Gujarat government and bring the state into disrepute.
The court noted that it appears that both the accused had an ulterior motive, an interest in maligning Gujarat for political ambitions. For that he got financial benefits from certain political groups, as well as other countries. The purpose of the accused was to tarnish the image of Gujarat by using false documents to prove the allegation that the post-Godhra riots were orchestrated by the then government.
The Special Investigation Team (SIT) set up to probe the case has alleged in an affidavit that at the behest of late Congress leader Ahmed Patel, he was trying to destabilize the then Chief Minister Narendra Modi-led BJP government in Gujarat. It was part of a bigger conspiracy.
