Even the dreams of the poor come true in India! ; Draupadi Murmu's speech after taking oath as President

New Delhi : Reaching the presidency is not my personal success, but the success of every poor person in the country. The poor in India can not only dream, but also fulfill them. President Draupadi Murmu said in his first speech to the members of Parliament after the swearing-in ceremony that my election as President is a proof of that.

Draupadi Murmu took oath as the 15th President of the country on Monday. In the historic ceremony held in the central hall of the Parliament House, Chief Justice N. V. Ramana gave him the oath of office and secrecy. Murmu thanked members of both Houses of Parliament and state legislatures for giving him the opportunity to hold the country’s highest constitutional post.

Murmu also said that a girl from a poor family, from a remote tribal area can reach the highest constitutional post of the country, which is the strength of India’s democracy.

The poor, dalits, backward, tribals who have been deprived of development for years have got representation through me. My election has been blessed by the poor of the country. My victory reflects the dreams and potential of millions of women and girls in the country. Murmu assured that I will give top priority to the welfare of youth and women. I belong to tribal community. I have had the opportunity to hold various constitutional positions from the corporator to the presidency, which is the glory of India, the mother of democracy. President Murmu also appealed to women to become more empowered and continue to increase their contribution in the development of every sector of the country.

Murmu started his speech in Hindi greeting the countrymen in the local dialect saying “Johar!” The love, trust and support of the countrymen will be my greatest strength to carry out these duties, she said. In his 18-minute speech, Murmu touched upon many issues including the poor, tribals, sustainable development, the central government’s ‘Digital India’ and Vocal for Local initiatives, as well as the handling of the Corona epidemic.

Before the swearing-in ceremony, Murmu went to Rajghat on Monday morning and saluted Mahatma Gandhi’s mausoleum. After that, he went to the Rashtrapati Bhavan and met the late President Ram Nath Kovind.

As the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidate, Murmu defeated the unanimous opposition candidate Yashwant Sinha.
