'Spicejet' flights on half for two months! ; Interim order of 'DGCA' due to repeated malfunctions in planes

New Delhi : The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) announced on Wednesday that SpiceJet Airlines has reduced half of its flights for the next eight weeks, about two months. The Directorate General has taken this interim action as the planes of this airline have been experiencing various malfunctions for the past few days. This action was taken as per ’19 A’ under the Aviation Rules 1937 in this regard.

The number of ‘SpiceJet’ flights will be applicable for eight weeks from the date of issue of the order. The company will be able to fly only 50 percent of the number of departures approved for the 2022 summer season. At least eight incidents of technical malfunctions were reported in the planes of ‘SpiceJet Airlines’ in 18 days. After this Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation V. K. Singh said on Monday that the Directorate General of Civil Aviation did not find any serious safety violations during the inspection of the SpiceJet planes. Between July 9 and 13, 53 inspections were conducted after 48 SpiceJet planes were found to have such malfunctions, the minister said.

The Union Minister in his written reply in the Rajya Sabha said that as a safety measure, the DGCA has directed SpiceJet to use an assuredly safe aircraft only after confirmation from the DGCA that SpiceJet has rectified all the defects. These orders of ‘DGCA’ have been issued due to poor internal security monitoring and inadequate maintenance. Singh mentioned that the safety standard of the company’s planes has deteriorated due to this.

Investigation of events

The ‘DGCA’ investigated the incidents related to the flights of ‘SpiceJet’ from 1st April to 5th July. On several occasions, the aircraft either returned to its home base or these aircraft insisted on landing at the destination, compromising safety. In the interim order of ‘DGCA’, it has been mentioned that the SpiceJet company is taking all possible measures to ensure that such a situation does not happen in the future. This company needs to remain committed to safe and reliable air transport.
