PTI, New Delhi: Many railway stations in the country are associated with the history of freedom movement. Prime Minister appeals to understand their importance in the freedom movement by visiting such a nearby railway station Narendra Modidid to the citizens on Sunday. He made this appeal in connection with the Amritmahotsava of Independence.

As part of Independence celebrations, Railways celebrated ‘Independence Trains and Railway Stations’ week from 18th to 23rd July. It included 27 trains and 75 railway stations from 24 states of the country. Modi said that the purpose behind these efforts is to make people aware of the role of Indian Railways in the freedom struggle. He said, “There are many railway stations in the country which are associated with the history of freedom movement. You will also be surprised to know about these stations. Among these stations, Modi mentioned Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Junction Gomo in Jharkhand, Kakori railway station near Lucknow, Vanchi Maniachchi Junction in Thoothukkudi district of Tamil Nadu, elaborating on their historical significance. Stating that this list is very long, he said that 75 railway stations related to the history of freedom movement in 24 states have been selected for this Amritmahotsav.

‘Historical importance should be explained to students’

Stating that these 75 stations have been beautifully decorated, Modi said that many programs are also being organized in these stations. Citizens must make time to visit such a historical station near them. By doing this, citizens will get a detailed understanding of the history of the freedom movement, which they are unaware of so far. I request the schools near such historical stations, that the teachers should take the students of their schools to such stations and explain the historical events that happened there to the students.

Various activities under Railway Special Week

Films were screened on station platforms during the ‘Freedom Trains and Railway Stations’ weekend. Also patriotic songs were played. Meanwhile, to highlight the importance of the respective stations, street dramas detailing the freedom struggle related to that station were presented. Trains decorated with flowers were flagged off by senior freedom fighters. Lighting, decorations, photo exhibitions were also installed at these stations.
