3 Midfielders Liverpool can sign to add depth to their squad

Liverpool has had quite a transfer window. The Reds signed the star striker Darwin Nunez from Benfica. Nunez was signed to replace departing Sadio Mane who went to Bayern Munich. The star striker cost 100 million for Liverpool. With the signing of Nunez, The Reds followed it with the signing of a much-awaited right-back backup to Trent Arnold in Calvin Ramsay.

It looked like Liverpool was done with their transfer window business before the start of the premier league season. But as the season began Liverpool’s worst enemy returned: The Injuries.

Liverpool lost half of their midfield to injuries in Alexander Ox Chamberlain, Thiago Alcantara, and Curtis Jones. Even their star midfielder Naby Keita has just returned from injury.

After the two premier league games, Liverpool has drawn both the games due to their lack of quality in midfield. Klopp’s lack of substitutes at Anfield has once again questioned the club’s transfer strategy. With just 2.5 weeks left until the window closes, Liverpool may be forced to re-enter the market. It’s possible that they’ll bring in a new experienced midfielder to help the young duo of William Carvalho and Harvey Elliott out.

With the certainty of Liverpool diving into the market for a midfielder. Let’s look at a few options that they might consider bringing in.

3 Midfielders Liverpool Sign Before Transfer Deadline Day

Nicolo Barella one of the top targets for Liverpool in midfield
Nicolo Barella is one of the top targets for Liverpool in midfield

1. Nicolò Barella from Inter Milan

Barella has been on Liverpool’s radar for quite some time. The Reds have sent out scouts on multiple occasions to keep track of his progress. Liverpool kept an eye on him since his days at Cagliari.

Since joining Italian giants Inter Milan. Nicolo Barella has transformed himself into an ace midfielder. He can be creative as well as ugly as a proper DM. Coming onto Barella’s performance he was an instrumental part in Italy’s success in Euros back in 2021.

Last Season Barella managed to score 4 goals and provided 13 assists and helped Inter to finish 2nd in Serie A. Key strengths of Barella are his passing skills and ability to find spaces in tight defensive lines. His tenacious energy would allow him to cover large swathes of the pitch, and his ability to time his runs into the box would mesh well with Mo Salah’s excursions. Liverpool is exactly looking for this type of profile in their midfield and he suits them.

With getting Barella the only question will be his valuation. Inter won’t let their top talent drift apart that easily. According to reports, Inter will accept a bid in the range of 80 million for the Italian international. Is Liverpool willing to go down that road and pay that insane sum of money only time will tell.

2. Jude Bellingham from Dortmund

He is regarded as one of the youngest upcoming superstars in the world of football. Bellingham since joining Dortmund back in 2020 has been just phenomenal. Many Top European Clubs are behind Jude Bellingham.

Jude Bellingham has some unique qualities which can provide the cutting edge to any team over their opponents. Bellingham’s passing game is on point. He is a crisp passer of the ball. He can break tight defense lines with accurate long balls and through balls. Also, Jude is a progressive player who likes to drive the ball forward and makes those darting runs from midfield to help out in attack.

Another quality that makes Bellingham stand out from others at his age is his maturity and versatility. Bellingham is very versatile and can play different positions in that midfield. He can either operate as no.6 or as no.8. He has an outstanding game presence and maturity for his age, which is rare to find in youngsters.

From Liverpool’s point of view, another plus point in the deal would be player admiration for the club. Jude Bellingham is set to be a boyhood Liverpool fan and dreams of joining The Reds and playing at Anfield.

However, coming into his transfer Dortmund have all the cards in their hands. He has a long-term contract with German giants and they wouldn’t let go of one of their top talents that easily. For there to be any possibility of a transaction taking place, Liverpool’s upper management would have to give their approval for a deal that may end up costing more than 110 million pounds.

3. Youri Tielemans from Leicester City

Youri Tielemans can be that wildcard option for Liverpool if they failed to get in above mentioned top 2 targets. Tielemans is viewed as one of the best midfielders outside the Premier League’s ‘Top Six’ and regularly features for Belgium. He’s a nice passer of the ball and does contribute with goals, finding the net seven times last season.

Tielemans is also young enough to be influenced by Klopp’s coaching and will only go up in value if Liverpool gets him on the cheap. With Tielemans not signing a contract extension with Foxes, it looks like if Liverpool are serious about him then this deal might go through before the deadline day.
