Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai informed the Lok Sabha that 4794 accused have been arrested during the period of three years from 2018 to 2020 in the case of hurting religious sentiments. This figure was given by the government while replying to a question by Trinamool Congress MP Mimi Chakraborty.
According to the information provided by the Union Minister of State for Home Nityananda Rai, 4794 accused were arrested in the case of hurting religious sentiments during the three year period of 2018-20. Of these, 1716 people were arrested in 2018, 1315 in 2019 and 1763 in 2020.

Most of these crimes have been reported in Uttar Pradesh. In Uttar Pradesh, 628 people have been arrested for hurting religious sentiments in three years. Then comes Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh. 613, 552, 383 persons have been arrested respectively in this state. Other states including Telangana, Gujarat and Rajasthan have also reported a large number of crimes. North-Eastern states have a lower incidence of these crimes. 351 people have been arrested in Assam, while 23 people have been arrested from Manipur.
Only two people have been arrested in this case in Goa. A total of 34 people have been arrested in Jammu and Kashmir in three years. Also, 31 people have been arrested from Delhi for hurting religious sentiments. Importantly, not a single crime was registered in Ladakh, Puducherry, Lakshadweep and Chandigarh.
