Bahujan Samaj Party president Mayawati has announced her support for National Democratic Alliance (NDA) vice-presidential candidate Jagdeep Dhankhar. After the recently held presidential election, the vice presidential election will be held on August 6. The current Vice President Venkaiah Naidu’s tenure will end on August 10. Trinamul Congress has decided to abstain from voting in this election.
Mayawati has tweeted that Bahujan Samaj Party has decided to support Dhankhar considering the interests of citizens and the movement for it. She also said in a tweet that the election for the highest office of the country was finally held as there was no consensus between the ruling party and the opposition. Mayawati has said that the election will be held on August 6 as the same situation has arisen again in connection with the selection of the post of Vice President. Opposition parties have announced Margaret Alva as their candidate for the post of Vice President.
A lawyer by profession, Jagdeep Dhankhar started his political career in 1989. After being appointed as the Governor of West Bengal in 2019, he was in the news due to his strained relationship with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. After resigning from the post of Governor, Dhankhar is now contesting for the post of Vice President. Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha MPs will vote in the election for India’s second highest constitutional post. Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has already announced its support to Dhankhar for this election.
