Colombo: Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe on Wednesday thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India for providing timely financial assistance to Sri Lanka. He was speaking while addressing the plenary session of Parliament which resumed on Wednesday after a week-long adjournment.
Wickremesinghe said that I have to mention the substantial help provided by our neighboring country India in its efforts to come out of the economic crisis. The Government of India under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi helped us immensely in our time of need. On behalf of Sri Lankans, I thank Prime Minister Modi, Government of India and Indians. Modi, while congratulating Wickremesinghe on his election as President last week, said that India will always support the efforts of Sri Lankans to overcome the economic crisis through the established democratic system in Sri Lanka.
The new government of Sri Lanka has a big challenge to find a way out of the economic crisis and provide stability to the country. India has given four billion dollars in aid to Sri Lanka since January this year. About five billion dollars are needed in the next six months to meet the basic needs of two crore two million Sri Lankans. In this regard, Sri Lanka is in discussion with other countries including the International Monetary Fund.
