A banana was thrown from the crowd at Brazilian players celebrating a goal in a friendly against Tunisia in Paris on Tuesday.

Forward Richardson scored the team’s second goal in a 5–1 win at the Parc des Princes when a banana was on his side and the other Brazilians were celebrating near a corner flag. What appeared to be a water bottle and other object were also thrown towards them.

Brazil was using the match to make a statement against racism, with players posing in front of a sign before kickoff that said: “Without our black players, we would not have stars on our shirts” – the top five The stars refer to the team crest which represents its five World Cup titles.

The Brazilian Football Federation condemned the incident and strengthened its stance to “fight against racism”.

The federation president said he was shocked by what happened.

“The punishment for these actions needs to be made more stringent,” said Ednaldo Rodrigues.

Brazilian media said stadium security made an unsuccessful attempt to identify the man who threw the banana on the field.
