Brenna Stewart and the United States made a major defensive effort to defeat Canada and reach the World Cup gold medal game for the fourth consecutive tournament.

Stewart scored 17 points as the Americans beat Canada 83-43 on Friday to take an early lead. 43 points was the lowest score in a semi-final match in World Cup history.

“Canada have been playing really well throughout the tournament and the goal was just to get out there and really limit them,” said US forward Alyssa Thomas. “We were really off the jump with our game plan.”

The Americans will face China, who beat Australia 61-59. Australia will take on Canada in the bronze medal game on Saturday.

The Chinese team lost to the US by 14 points in the pool round – the closest game of the tournament for the Americans.

“Our goal was to win the gold medal and we are in a position to do that,” said American coach Cheryl Reeve.

The US (7–0), who are on record pace for points and win margin in the tournament, took control of the game by scoring the first 15 points. The Americans fought every shot at the defensive end as the Canadians missed their first nine attempts off the ground. On the offensive end, Stewart, Aja Wilson and Alyssa Thomas got basically any shot they wanted.

“I think after that punch, it really took the wind out of them,” Thomas said. “They didn’t know what to do with their crime after that.”

Leticia Amihere, who played in South Carolina for former American coach Don Staley, eventually made a driving layup, giving Canada about 5 minutes into the game. Amihere led Canada with eight points.

The US led 27-7 by the end of the quarter. Canada had made four turnovers – the same number of team matches against Puerto Rico in the quarter-finals, the lowest total in a game in 30 years.

The Americans were up 45-21 till the halfway mark and the lead continued to expand in the last 20 minutes. The win was the biggest margin for the US in the medal round, which topped a 36-point victory over Spain at the 2010 World Cup.

Canada aims for first medal since 1986

Canada (5-2) reached the medal round for the first time since 1986 and have a chance to win their first medal after winning bronze that year.

“We didn’t get it done today, but what we’re going to do is take what we learned today and how we can change it tomorrow,” Canada captain Natalie Achonwa said. “It’s still a sport for a medal and it’s just as important to us.”

The US has won seven out of eight matches with Canada at the World Cup, although the last was in 2010. The only victory for Canada came in 1975.

record making american

The win was the 29th in a row in World Cup play for the Americans, who have not lost since the 2006 semi-final against Russia. The Soviet Union holds the World Cup record in 1959–86 with 56 straight victories. It is only the second time in the history of the Americans that they have reached four gold medal events in a row. He also won thrice from 1979-90.

This American team, which has so many newcomers, dominated the paint even without 6-foot-8 Brittany Griner, outsmarting opponents at an average of 55-24.

The low point total broke the 53 scored by South Korea against Russia in 2002.

“We’re starting to build that identity,” Wilson said of the defensive effort. “We’re fast and timid and I think that’s our identity.”

America averages 101 points per game. The previous high of Americans coming into the tournament was 99.1 set in 1994.
