Canada's Pospisil lost the quarterfinal match to Djokovic at the Tel Aviv Open. CBC Sports

No. 1 seed Novak Djokovic advanced to the semi-finals after beating Canada’s Vasek Pospisil 7-6(5), 6-3 in Israel on Friday.

The Serbian players are playing their first ATP tournament since Wimbledon in July. Pospisil drew as a lucky loser and beat eighth-seeded Talon Grixpour of the Netherlands and Aidan Leshem of Israel before Djokovic fought for an hour, 53 minutes.

Djokovic will now face Roman Safiulin of Russia, who defeated Arthur Rinderknecht of France 6-4, 6-1.

Croatia’s No. 2 seed Marin Cilic also advanced when British qualifier Liam Brody withdrew due to injury. In the semi-finals, Cilic will face France’s Constant Lestienne, who defeated fourth seed Maxime Crecy of America 6-7(4), 6-3, 7-6(3).
