Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa suffered neck and head injuries after being dismissed in Thursday’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals and was taken to hospital for further evaluation.
The Dolphins said Tagovailoa was conscious and had movement in all his limbs after being carried by a stretcher off the field. He was taken to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center.
Tagovailoa chased down and was dismissed by Josh Tupo with almost six minutes remaining in the first half. It was turned around and thrown on the turf. He lay down for more than seven minutes before being loaded onto the backboard, immobilized and tied to a stretcher after his facemask was removed.
Dolphins players gathered as Tagovailoa was taken off the field and the crowd chanted “Tua! Tua!” Slogans.
Disputed withdrawal against buffalo
Tagovailoa, 24, was suffering from back pain and was listed as a suspect for most of the week before the game.
Tagovailoa briefly abandoned Sunday’s 21–19 win over the Buffalo Bills, as the team originally said was due to a head injury after taking a hit from Buffalo Bills linebacker Matt Milano late in the first half. Because they were distracted. He missed just three snaps and came back after halftime, a decision that prompted a joint review by the NFL and the National Football League Players Association into the decision to allow him to return to the game.
Miami originally said it was a head injury, but Tagovailoa said after the game that he hit his back when he fell.
Before abandoning Thursday’s game, Tagovailoa scored 8 for 14 from 100 yards and made an interception. He was replaced in the game by Teddy Bridgewater, who threw a touchdown pass to Chase Edmonds with 15 seconds left in the half.
