Famous American extreme athlete Hilary Nelson's body was found on Nepalese Mountains. CBC News

The body of a famous US skier, who went missing this week after falling from the world’s eighth highest mountain, was recovered on Wednesday and taken to the capital of Nepal.

Hilary Nelson, 49, was skiing down the 8,163-metre summit of Mount Manaslu with her partner Jim Morrison on Monday when she fell off the mountain.

His body was taken by helicopter to a hospital in Kathmandu, where doctors plan to conduct an autopsy.

Rescue teams conducted a helicopter search on Wednesday after failing to find Nelson on Tuesday and Monday, when bad weather hindered their search.

Avalanche 1 on the same mountain

Apart from this, a Nepalese man was killed and several other climbers were injured in a low altitude avalanche on the same mountain on Monday.

Hundreds of climbers and their local guides were trying to reach the summit during Nepal’s autumn season.

Nelson from Telluride, Co., and Morrison from Tahoe, Calif., are extreme skiers who summited Mount Lhotse, the world’s fourth highest mountain, in 2018.

The Nepal government has issued permits to 504 climbers for the autumn season. Most are climbing the Manaslu mountain.
