Jared Young of Prince George, BC, helps the team win their first Major League Baseball game. CBC News

Jared Young, the first man to play baseball in the Majors of the northern B.C. city of Prince George, had a winning game Friday afternoon in his first Major League Baseball outing.

Young, an outfielder, hit a two-out double at the bottom of the eighth inning, which contributed to the Chicago Cubs’ 2–1 defeat of the Colorado Rockies at Wrigley Field in Chicago.

Young has been working his way out of the team’s younger colleagues in Iowa as he was drafted by the Cubs in 2017 before being called up on Wednesday.

The team announced his selection after Young’s Iowa Cubs teammate, Rafael Ortega, was not able to make it due to finger injuries.

At a news conference on Friday, Young said he really enjoyed the experience of his first major league game.

,[Wrigley Field] Maybe the tallest, tallest building I’ve ever lived in,” he said. “That was great. It’s a real day.”

Young, 27, also mentioned that eight members of his family – including his parents and his older brother Tanner – enjoyed the overnight trip from Prince George to Chicago to watch the game.

“I’m sure they had a good time,” he said.

The broadcast video released by the Chicago Cubs shows his family and friends celebrating in the stands after their first hit.

Young’s mother Dana said she was “beyond excited” and “speechless” when she first heard that the Cubs had decided to call their son.

He admired his tenacity and determination and said that as a child he had always worked hard for his brother to improve his baseball skills.

“He never had a summer that he wasn’t in the ballpark,” he said Thursday before moving to Chicago. “He was always trying to keep everything up.”

The Chicago Cubs and Colorado Rockies still have two games to play this weekend.

Dana said that she must be watching.

“I can see my kid playing ball every day,” she said. “I’m very proud of that.”

Cole Valdi, communications director for the Prince George Cougars junior hockey team, said he first met Young through baseball when he was nine, and they’ve been friends ever since.

Valdi described Young as a leader who always puts his teammates before him and said his victory on Friday was Prince George’s “best sporting achievement”.

“No one is really close to doing it from the north – it’s very rare,” he said. “I’m not sure it will be repeated in the long run, so [it’s] Just a great moment.”
