Maple Leafs Tavares out for season opener with strain rib cage muscle | CBC Sports

Toronto Maple Leafs forward John Tavares will be out of a three-week ‘minimum’ due to an oblique (rib cage) strain, head coach Sheldon Keefe announced on Tuesday.

Tavares was tested on Tuesday while the team practiced, which led to the diagnosis of his injury.

He recorded a time of 17 minutes, 14 seconds while playing on the ice in one of the team’s two pre-season games against the Ottawa Senators on Saturday. Keefe said he had been dealing with the issue since that game.

The 32-year-old, entering his 14th season, played 79 matches last season. The Leafs made it to the playoffs last year, scoring 27 goals and 76 points.

Toronto is on the ice for their next pre-season game on Wednesday against the Montreal Canadiens.

The team opens the regular season on October 12 in Montreal.
