Canada's Jamal Murray as NBA stars return in pre-season CBC Sports

Ben Simmons ran behind the defense and caught a pass in the transition which he sank. About a minute later, he fired a cross-court pass for a 3-pointer to a Brooklyn Nets teammate.

Those were the types of plays the Philadelphia 76ers had seen many times before.

On Monday, Simmons finally made him for another team.

Simmons played in his first NBA game since June 2021 against his former club, making him one of several big names to return to basketball action.

“I’m grateful to be able to step on that floor, step on the NBA floor again,” Simmons said. “So I had a lot of fun there.”

Kawhi Leonard also returned for the Los Angeles Clippers, as did Canada’s Jamal Murray for the Denver Nuggets after they both sat down to recover from surgery for ACL tears last season.

“About that time 539 days later!!” Murray wrote on Twitter.

“It was nice to just be able to put in all the hard work that I put in 14, 16 months, just to be able to play against NBA talent,” Leonard said after the Clippers’ 102-97 win over Portland. , “Just being out there with people, talking, I missed it. It was a wonderful experience for me.”

There is no doubt about how their teams felt after being expected to be title contenders last season, but instead those hopes were ruined by injuries. Paul George also missed crucial time for the Clippers, and Michael Porter Jr. was out for all but nine games for the Nuggets.

They all played on Monday, with Damien Lillard returning to Portland after losing the final 47 games last season when the Clippers and Trail Blazers met in a preseason game.

Kevin Durant of the Nets said, “As a fan of the game, Kavi’s back is great for basketball, Jamal Murray’s is great for basketball.” “It’s great to see all the guys who have been injured and are able to play again.”

Simmons hoped he was closer to playing last February after being traded to the Nets in a deal titled by James Harden. Simmons, citing mental health reasons after the season was disappointing, drew a great deal of criticism after he was knocked out in the second round by Atlanta, the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference.

But a herniated disc prevented him from making his late-season debut and forced him to undergo off-season surgery.

Now completely cleared, Simmons was in the starting lineup and finished in 19 minutes with six points, five assists and four rebounds. He went weakly out of Philadelphia, passing a lay-up down the stretch of a Game 7 loss to the Hawks, with the last memory of 2016’s No. 1 pick time. But he looked confident to push the ball into transition or play from the post – though he missed only two of his free throws.

Simmons said he thought he would feel nervous but did not. Durant recalled feeling anxious when he returned after missing the 2019-20 season following Achilles tendon surgery.

“You think about how your lungs are going to feel in an organized sport because playing pickup, working out is different from playing in a sport,” Durant said. “So you just want to see where your feet are on the jump shot. So being away for a year makes you worry a lot about coming back. I know I did.”

In Seattle, a bevy of big names made their pre-season debut in front of sold-out crowds in just the second pre-season game between NBA teams in the Emerald City since the SuperSonics’ departure for Oklahoma City.
